At WedVibes, we’re always drawn to the stories behind the aesthetics—the vision boards, voice notes, and late-night Pinterest scrolls that quietly shape iconic wedding moments. So, we did what we do best: reached out to real brides who are planning weddings their way. From spontaneous proposals to guest lists made on Google Docs, these brides are rewriting the rules and curating celebrations that feel less like tradition and more like self-expression.
In this series, they open up about the moodboards they can’t stop tweaking, the TikTok trends they’re into, and the vendors who just get it. Expect real love stories, real planning highs (and lows), and plenty of inspiration for your own “main character” moment.
Meet The Couple
Bobbi and Gabriel live in Toronto but carry close ties to their Nigerian and Jamaican roots. Their careers even overlap in a way that fits both their love of travel and people. Gabriel works as a documentary filmmaker with a focus on social impact, and Bobbi is Head of Strategy at a social-impact advertising tech company based in the US.
How did you meet?
Our story almost fits the ‘invisible string theory’ category because we were orbiting one another but never truly connected for years. Despite going to high schools across the street from each other, finding out my mom was his family’s nurse, and being the best man and maid of honor at the wedding of our respective best friends…we didn’t start to grow our friendship until 2020. It was a done deal from there, and we’ve been locked in ever since!
The Proposal
I can honestly say the proposal was the biggest shock of my life. I’m very difficult to surprise, so Gabriel knew he had to catch me fully off guard. I had already planned a quick birthday getaway to Mexico City with my best friend, Salha. Secretly, Gabriel had been coordinating the proposal with her for a few months! He booked a restaurant I’d mentioned I wanted to visit while we were there and had my bestie add it to our itinerary for the last day of our trip.
After we had a perfect final meal, a violinist came out to play for the (nearly empty) restaurant. Suddenly, she started playing one of “our” songs, and I began recording it to send to Gabriel afterward. Still clueless, the violinist began to play another one of “our” songs, Stay Down by Brent Faiyaz. As she played, Gabriel walked out, and I immediately started crying with shock and joy at seeing him. It didn’t really sink in that he had flown into CDMX to propose until he was on one knee in front of me asking for my hand. All I could manage to say was “it was always yes” before I burst into tears again.

Planning Process
1. What’s been the highlight of your planning process so far?
Planning our engagement party! Since we got engaged abroad, being able to bring our closest family and friends together to celebrate was so fun. We had our engagement party in a beautiful pottery studio called Mi.Sul Space and leaned into a tropical theme with our florals and Jamaican canapés.
2. What’s surprised you most about wedding planning?
The overwhelming number of choices and decisions to be made! It’s such an exciting time, but with so many wedding-related events and constant to-dos, having a wedding planner to guide and help us has been so necessary for our busy lives.
3. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting their planning journey?
Start offline first. There are so many sources of inspiration to be found online that you may lose yourself, your personal vision for the day, and the story of your own love to the algorithm. Once you have a sense of what you want the day to feel like and how it will represent you, turn to the professionals: wedding planners, wedding pages, and people who curate experiences (from fashion to art curators)!
