Saber Arches and Velvet Roses in a Bavarian Garden Wedding

Set in the heart of Bavaria, Hannah and Cammack’s wedding brought “Old World Glam” to life with a striking mix of tradition, elegance, and theatrical detail. From the grandeur of the ceremony at the historic St. Johannis Church in Ansbach to the carriage arrival at the Baroque Orangerie, every moment was thoughtfully planned and visually rich. With a saber arch exit, a string quartet in the garden, and a candlelit dinner in the Blue Hall, this 90-guest celebration felt like stepping into a romantic European fairytale—just with more dancing, kilts, and sabers.

Location: Ansbach, Bavaria, Germany
Style: Old-World Glam
Time of planning: 9 months
Number of guests: 90
Setting: Ceremony – church, reception – ballroom
Season: Summer

Hannah and Cammack are both United States Army Officers stationed in Germany, but their story began years earlier at West Point. They met during summer training before their senior year and spent their final year of college building a relationship filled with shared adventures. After graduating and commissioning, they traveled the world together before beginning a long-distance chapter during their officer training. Now posted just an hour apart, they continue to explore Europe as a couple. Cammack proposed during a hike outside Columbus, Georgia on September 1st, 2023—exactly one year before their wedding—when he got down on one knee at a scenic viewpoint and asked Hannah to be his wife. She said “YES!

Bride's Look

Hannah hair and makeup artist, Marie Frauhammer, arrived with a clear vision: to enhance, not mask, the bride’s natural beauty. Marie crafted a nude makeup look with soft pink tones that gave Hannah a flawless complexion and a subtle, dewy glow. The focus stayed on fresh skin and gentle highlights that caught the light just right. Marie also provided a personalized skincare consultation at the trial, and in Hannah’s words, “Marie is a world-class professional artist. Using her guided care, my skin began to glow leading up to my wedding.”

For the hairstyle, Marie created a simple high bun that struck the perfect balance between elegance and softness. Not too sleek, it felt romantic and classic, especially under the bride’s double-blusher, cathedral-length veil finished with lace.

Hannah wore a long-sleeve, A-frame dress with lace detailing on the bodice and a flowing chiffon skirt. She borrowed pearl earrings from her mother-in-law and stepped into her mother’s shoes, adding personal meaning to her look. Her scent was Daisy by Marc Jacobs, chosen for its light, floral notes that matched her timeless style. Holding a bouquet of deep red roses, white blooms, and cascading amaranthus, Hannah looked completely herself—refined, radiant, and ready.

Groom's Fashion

Cammack honored his military roots by wearing his formal United States Army uniform for the ceremony, a choice that reflected both his and Hannah’s shared profession and the service legacy within their families.

For the reception, he changed into a vintage Brooks Brothers tuxedo paired with Johnston & Murphy tassel loafers—an outfit he described as laid-back yet refined. He chose Floris London’s 71/72 scent, adding a subtle, classic note to his evening look.

Ceremony

The ceremony took place inside the soaring, light-filled nave of St. Johannis Church in Ansbach’s Altstadt. With its intricate stained glass windows and historic stone walls, the setting already offered a dramatic sense of grandeur. The floral arrangements added to the atmosphere with bouquets of deep burgundy roses, blush-toned florals, and cascading greenery tied to the pews. The bridesmaids stood in soft blue and silver-toned dresses, each holding a bouquet of olive branches, beige roses, or red blooms that echoed the romantic color palette. The entire space felt still and reverent, filled with late-summer light and the warm tones of Baroque architecture.

Guests experienced a traditional Protestant service, complete with the ringing of church bells, a live organist, and the formal giving away of the bride. One memorable moment came when Hannah stood outside waiting for her father to return from parking the car, bells chiming in the background—“it felt like a lifetime,” she said.

After the ceremony, six of the couple’s uniformed friends raised sabers in a classic military Saber Arch, symbolizing Hannah’s welcome into military life. As tradition dictates, the passage fee was a kiss. Then, a white horse-drawn carriage pulled up in front of the church steps, ready to whisk the newlyweds away to the reception.

"We were told that we awed our guests as we materialized out of the bright light with each step."

Cocktail Hour

Cocktail hour unfolded in the gardens of the Ansbach Orangerie, where guests sipped drinks and wandered among the trimmed hedges and gravel paths as the string quartet led by Mariola played softly in the background. The moment turned theatrical when Cammack’s best man emerged from the woods playing the bagpipes, announcing the couple’s arrival by carriage.

Hannah stepped down first, glowing in the afternoon sun with her cathedral veil swapped for a white parasol. Her lace sleeves and structured skirt moved gently as she walked toward their guests, bouquet still in hand. The high bun, soft makeup, and timeless dress came together once again—this time in full daylight—as guests welcomed the newlyweds into their garden celebration.

"The most memorable moments come from the horse drawn carriage: flying through town in our get-away-carriage after we were just married and entering our very own garden party are unforgettable moments."

Decor & Setting

Inside the Blue Hall of the orangerie, the reception design embraced moody elegance with dramatic florals and layered textures. Kathrin Ortman and florist Elke from Blumen Bingold transformed the space using tall gold stands overflowing with burgundy roses, wine-hued dahlias, deep maroon anthuriums, and trailing amaranthus. Cascading greenery and hazy blue thistles added contrast and dimension. Tables were set with soft blue linens, gold chargers, and smoky blue glassware, bringing in the couple’s chosen palette of burgundy and hazy blue. Candlelight flickered across each table, and the chandeliers above added a classic glow that tied perfectly into the “Old World Glam” vision.

Reception

As guests found their seats beneath glittering chandeliers, the sound of Herb Alpert, Etta James, and Elvis set a nostalgic mood while dinner was served.

One special detail during dinner was the “decades of love” display—a table showcasing the wedding dresses of the couple’s mothers and photographs from their parents’ and grandparents’ weddings. Each photo was paired with handwritten anecdotes, honoring the legacy of marriage and reminding guests that this new union stood on the shoulders of generations before.

After dinner, attention turned to the wedding cake by Dany’s Cupcakery, a white two-tiered creation finished with delicate piping and soft vintage details. Guests gathered as Hannah and Cammack stood side by side and cut the cake together using a ceremonial saber, a nod to their shared military background. The moment was both playful and formal, echoing the day’s balance between tradition and personality. Around the cake stood a tower of matching cupcakes, ready to be served alongside slices from the centerpiece. It was a lighthearted pause before the evening dances began.

As the lights dimmed and the music changed, Hannah returned in a tea-length A-frame party dress covered in sequins, ready for the dance floor. Her makeup and hair, created earlier that morning by Marie Frauhammer, still looked flawless—her skin glowing under the soft light, and her high bun holding its elegant shape. The newlyweds shared their first dance to Liszt’s Liebestraum, followed by emotional dances with their parents. Then came ABBA’s Dancing Queen and the party officially began. It was a night of music, celebration, and movement—filled with moments they’ll carry for years to come.

Advice from the couple:

• Take the traditions of marriage seriously and remember that the day is not just about you, but about your family and friends who made you who you are, and about God who created us and gave us marriage as a gift for man and woman to enjoy. Ground all you do on your wedding day in gratitude and thanksgiving; by doing so you build the foundation of your marriage on solid rock.
