A Gothic-to-Urban Detroit Wedding Done Perfect

Through the lens of Ben and Kadin, this Detroit wedding feels like the kind of day that quietly cancels out FOMO altogether. Kendra and Jacob mixed and matched the aesthetics that couples usually struggle to choose between for their big day. It started in a gothic cathedral, where scale and symmetry set the tone, then moved seamlessly into the city’s concrete-and-glass energy, softened by an open-air cocktail hour.

Despite hosting 160 guests, intimacy never got lost in the scale. The day was anchored by small, thoughtful details that clearly mattered to the newlyweds. Love letters prepared for every guest, a prayer shared with their closest circle, and wax figures of their beloved pets topping the cake all quietly reinforced the same idea.

Location: Detroit, USA
Style: Timeless, Elegant, Chic
Time of planning: 8 months
Number of guests: 160
Setting: Church, Ballroom
Season: Fall

Kendra and Jacob’s story is the definition of slow burn. They first crossed paths in middle school, got assigned to the same group during an eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., and quietly circled each other for years with mutual crushes and zero urgency. An ice cream date in sophomore year finally shifted things into motion, followed by college together at Ohio University, a move to Chicago, and a relationship that actually grew up.

The proposal arrived in Napa Valley, disguised as a casual couples’ getaway. A gondola ride before the winery opened, a staged wine tasting, and a rooftop moment overlooking the California mountains later, the weekend turned into a very intentional yes.

Bride's Morning & Fashion

Kendra got ready at her mom’s house, setting a calm, grounded tone for the morning. The Comet Corset by Vivienne Westwood was paired with a custom crepe-back satin skirt created by Belle Atelier Workroom. The Westwood corsetry added backbone, while the overall simplicity kept it perfectly aligned with the organic vision the couple had set for the day. It sat effortlessly within the gothic interior of the cathedral, complementing the scale and drama of the architecture.

Platform heels by Vince Camuto grounded the look with confidence rather than delicacy. A two-tier lace veil added just enough structure, avoiding anything overly soft or romantic. Her mom’s diamond earrings and tennis bracelet brought sentiment into the styling. Jo Malone’s Poppy & Barley perfume finished the look with a quiet, fresh note.

The bride said: “I wanted my style to be modern yet timeless — something that truly reflected who I am. It was important for me to feel like myself, so I carried that through in both my makeup and hair.” Beauty by Set by Dren stayed firmly in the natural glam lane. Soft glow, a bouncy blowout, and a light hand throughout.

Groom’s Fashion

Jacob’s look balanced classic and modern with ease. A black tuxedo for the ceremony, velvet loafers, and a custom shirt embroidered with their wedding date and Kendra’s initials on the sleeves: personal, discreet, and not performative.

Vows

Before the ceremony, the lovebirds exchanged private vows. A quiet moment before a public one. The first look waited until the aisle, making that walk all the more charged.

Ceremony

The ceremony unfolded at Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, a space of almost unreal beauty. Monumental in scale and rich in detail, the cathedral felt deeply atmospheric, balancing sacred scale with a sense of human intimacy. Soaring arches, stained glass filtering soft light, and a graphic black-and-white checkered floor anchored the space.

Before stepping into the aisle, Kendra shared a quiet, deeply personal moment with her closest circle. Surrounded by her bridesmaids and family, she paused to pray together. It was one of the most meaningful parts of the day for her, setting the tone long before the doors opened.

The bride made a choice that reflected that same sense of intention. She entered not only with her father, but with her mother by her side as well. Family, faith, and presence moving forward together.

Walking down the aisle to Oceans by Hillsong became the emotional anchor of the day. The instant the music began, everything shifted. Jacob, overwhelmed, couldn’t hold back his emotions. The reaction was raw and immediate, a moment that made the scale of the cathedral feel suddenly intimate.

The ceremony itself remained traditional and reverent, centered on honoring the sacrament of marriage and keeping God at the heart of their union. A string quartet filled the cathedral with sound that felt elevated yet restrained.

Moments Together

Right after the ceremony, Kendra and Jacob stepped outside and let the energy breathe. Pride party and groom party, movement, real laughter, people adjusting bouquets and ties, that post-ceremony adrenaline where everyone’s finally exhaling. Ben & Kadin lean hard into comfort-first shooting, so the photos land alive, not performative.

This is the part of the day where Ben and Kadin really shows their whole thing: a full story, start to finish, with the in-between moments getting the same respect as the big ones. They literally build their frames around digital and film combined.

Then the mood flips, and it gets even better. They head back inside and the visuals turn architectural: long corridors, clean lines, big marble moments, graphic framing, and that museum-grade geometry that makes everything look more editorial. This is where the flash comes out, the photos start to show texture.

Bonus styling upgrade that reads instantly on camera: Jacob switching into a white jacket with black lapels. It pushes the look into refined, old-money-adjacent territory, crisp against the stone interiors, and it gives the portraits that extra layer of classic charm without turning the vibe stiff.

Cocktail Hour

Cocktail hour unfolded on a high-floor terrace overlooking Detroit’s skyline, with the city stretching out in every direction. Concrete, glass, sharp lines, that unmistakable urban jungle energy, but softened by warm light and perfect weather that showed up exactly on cue.

The transition was seamless. From the cathedral’s arches and checkerboard floors to skyline views and open air, the cocktail hour became the perfect bridge into the evening. Guests settled in easily, drinks in hand, conversations flowing without effort.

Food played its part too. Generous spreads of cheese and charcuterie, layered boards of cured meats, fresh bites designed for grazing rather than formal plating. It was abundant without being heavy or indulgent, and it did not steal focus. Exactly what a cocktail hour should be: a moment to reset, reconnect, and shift gears before the night moved fully indoors.

Reception

The reception took place at Anthology Events inside the historic Book Tower in Detroit, and the space honestly set the tone before a single flower was placed. Deep, saturated wall tones gave the room instant mood, while windows wrapped the space from every side, letting daylight pour in. Above it all, a glass rooftop kept the room feeling open and elevated.

Florals and styling built on that foundation. Working with Lemonwood Floral, Kendra leaned into a modern green-and-white palette, layered with pops of pink, fruits, and texture. Kiwi, olives, and grapes were woven into the tablescape alongside linen signage, green drapery, and elegant candelabras, adding softness and depth.

One of the standout details was that no two tables looked exactly the same. A long table was styled simply with single white lilies, clean and restrained. Others featured fuller installations mixing burgundy, green, and white florals. Different moods, same design language.

Once the doors opened, quests entered, watching as Jacob carried Kendra in his arms, instantly breaking the formality and setting a relaxed, celebratory tone. Despite hosting 160 guests, the couple made sure every person felt seen. Personalized love letters awaited each guest at their seat. Another interactive moment came through a framed photograph of the building itself, where guests were invited to write handwritten wishes, turning the venue into a living keepsake of the night.

The evening unfolded naturally from there. Heartfelt toasts from Kendra’s dad and stepdad, along with the best man and matron of honor, balanced emotion and humor perfectly. Their first dance to Beyond by Leon Bridges felt intimate and unforced, a quiet moment in the middle of a full room.

Cake followed, topped with wax figures of the couple’s puppies. As the night shifted into party mode, mini burgers made their way around the room, and suddenly everyone, from kids to grandparents, was on their feet.

Kendra and Jacob’s wedding resonated because it did things with care. Staying close, staying present, and sharing the day fully together became the quiet throughline from start to finish. And by the end one thing was clear: this wasn’t just a beautifully designed day, it was a genuinely fun one.

Advice from the couple:

Our biggest piece of advice is to be fully present throughout the entire day. Never leave each other’s side and experience everything together.

• Stay close throughout the whole event, and don’t stress about the small details. The moments you share together will be what you remember most.

• Focus on the fact that all your favorite people are there to celebrate your love.
