Milena and Reed share a rare kind of love story, one that led them to an equally rare destination. Photographed by Anisa Alsabri, the celebration unfolded just beyond the historic walls of Malta’s capital, where place and narrative felt inseparable. For most of their guests, the island was entirely unfamiliar, a detail that allowed the experience to unfold collectively. Everyone arrived as a first-timer, discovering the city and the rhythm of the place together.
Planning the entire celebration remotely, Milena and Reed relied heavily on trust, especially when it came to documenting a day rooted so deeply in emotion. Speaking about Anisa’s role, they shared: “From our very first meeting to the final gallery delivery, she was an absolute joy to work with. Her warmth, professionalism, and calm energy made the entire experience seamless and genuinely enjoyable.”
Location: Valletta, Malta
Style: Timeless, Chic, Classic
Time of planning: 1.5 years
Number of guests: 50
Setting: Hotel
Season: Summer
A few years ago, Reed moved back to his hometown to care for his mother. Here he met Milena, who was raising her two children. Deeply involved in endurance sports and philanthropy, Reed has competed in IronMan triathlons, ocean races, and marathons, while also serving as a Movember Foundation ambassador for over 13 years. In 2022, Movember invited him to join a small group of men climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness and funds for men’s health. The team raised over $200,000, and Reed traveled to Tanzania.
He later shared: “Before leaving, Mila tied red strings on each of our wrists as a way to keep us connected and safe during my climb. After summiting, I walked into an art gallery in Kilimanjaro and came across a beautiful tanzanite and diamond ring. I learned that tanzanite is a very rare gemstone found only in one mine in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro. I bought the ring and planned to propose one year later on the anniversary of my climb.” One year later, that plan came together at the top of Mount San Jacinto overlooking Palm Springs.
Bride's Morning & Fashion
The red thread was woven through the entire day as a narrative cue. Milena’s wedding morning began with that same string placed beside her engagement ring. There was no wedding party involved. Instead, she spent the morning with her daughter, turning the preparation into a quiet, intentional mother-daughter moment.
Makeup was handled by Danilo Monforte, polished and refined. Hair was styled into a sleek high bun with a precise center part. The look was finished with a full veil featuring a pencil-edge finish, with a subtle stitched outline framing the veil and giving it structure without softness overload.
Milena completed the look with Christian Louboutin heels, adding a sharp note of polish. The iconic red sole felt like a quiet callback to the red thread, another restrained flash of color woven into the story rather than spelled out. Her gown by Pronovias was discovered alongside her sister-in-law. The dress itself was clean, strong, and understated. Paired with carefully chosen accessories, the final look felt assured, intentional, and fully aligned with the emotional clarity that defined the day.
Groom’s Fashion
Reed’s look was inspired by classic James Bond tailoring. He wore an off-white shawl-collar dinner jacket and black tuxedo trousers from Ralph Lauren Purple Label, finished with black-and-gold cufflinks and a black bow tie.
Polished Hugo Boss tuxedo loafers completed the ensemble. He chose to skip a boutonniere, letting the tailoring speak for itself.
In a deeply personal detail, Reed wore his late father’s wedding ring, honoring his memory while sharing the day with his mother, and his new parents-in-law.
First Look
The couple chose to have their first look outside the hotel, in the garden, keeping the moment private and unfiltered. It was just the two of them at first, quiet and intentional, before children joined shortly after.
Reed’s reaction to seeing Milena was immediate and emotional, fully taking in her look and the moment itself. The setting, the absence of an audience, made it feel personal. From there, they moved together back into the hotel, transitioning from the first look into the ceremony.
Ceremony
The ceremony took place at The Phoenicia’s gazebo, set above the waters of Marsamxett Harbor and reached through the hotel’s manicured gardens. Guests were seated beneath the Mediterranean sun, welcomed with wooden hand fans and delicate paper parasols.
The aisle itself became the visual anchor of the ceremony, clean, structured, and architectural. Soft white draping framed the gazebo, creating a light, almost weightless backdrop. White chairs lined the aisle without embellishment, allowing the greenery of the gardens and the harbor beyond to act as the natural setting.
As Milena walked down the aisle, a violin rendition of Taylor Swift’s Enchanted filled the air, carried softly by the sea breeze. The moment was emotional and unguarded, with tears shared across the ceremony, including from Milena’s daughter, who later explained they were tears of happiness.
The ceremony was officiated by Reed’s longtime friend and mentor, Scott, who had also played a key role in planning the proposal at Mount San Jacinto. As an ordained minister, he opened with a traditional Maltese blessing before sharing the couple’s story and proposal. The couple exchanged personal vows and matching gold wedding bands.
“No matter where life takes us, no matter how far we feel from each other, or how high we climb, I will always follow the thread back to you, because I know our bond is deeper than chance, and stronger than fate. Through time, through change, through everything.”
Milena, the bride
Moments Together
After the ceremony, Milena and Reed stepped into the gardens with Anisa for a quiet stretch of time together. This is where Anisa Alsabri’s style really comes through. Her approach feels effortless and cinematic, built around movement, real interaction, and instinctive timing. As the couple later shared, “Anisa has this rare ability to make you forget the camera is even there. We felt completely ourselves, and somehow every emotion still made it into the frame.”
None of the images felt formulaic or expected. Anisa followed Milena and Reed through the gardens, catching them spinning, laughing, and moving naturally through the space.
One of the moments the newlyweds remember most happened at sunset, when the light shifted, and everything slowed down. The parasol moments added a soft, slightly vintage note, while the horizontal black-and-white frames stood out as especially strong, film-like, and atmospheric.
Milena was photographed seated, in sunglasses, with the slit of her gown quietly revealed, relaxed and confident. These images leaned editorial but never felt staged, focusing on silhouette or attitude.
Reception
Guests made their way back through The Phoenicia gardens, accompanied by birdsong and the soft rustle of greenery, toward the Rotunda, a circular outdoor space tucked behind an ornate iron gate shaped as two peacocks. The setting felt intimate and discreet, despite its grandeur.
Each place setting featured hand-embroidered napkins made by the bride herself, paired with monogrammed menus printed on handmade paper. Finished in red thread, the detail worked like an insider reference, a low-key callback to the narrative that shaped the wedding.
Tables were styled with restraint: low floral arrangements releasing a subtle fragrance, silver candelabra catching the light, and nothing competing with the architecture of the space.
Milena and Reed entered the reception to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” welcomed by cheers and immediate energy. Reed opened the evening with a heartfelt speech, encouraging guests to stay present and savor the night, aware that a gathering like this would never happen again in quite the same way. Throughout the night, white-glove service by The Phoenicia’s team kept the flow seamless as guests enjoyed a four-course dinner centered on fresh seafood and local ingredients.
Afterwards, the speeches unfolded naturally. Reed’s sister, Tiffany, spoke first, sharing, “Reed didn’t just win the lottery, he won the whole jackpot,” setting the tone for laughter and emotion. Best friends Michael and Nima followed, telling Reed’s story in chapters, past, present, and future.
Later in the evening, Milena changed into a second look crafted by her grandmother, Elsa. At 85, the self-taught seamstress created a shimmering mini dress of tulle, crystals, sequins, and pearls, paired with Jimmy Choo heels, a piece rich with generational meaning.
The couple surprised their guests by descending the stairs on either side of the band and meeting on the dancefloor for an Argentine tango set to Gotan Project’s Santa Maria. The dance honored Milena’s heritage, her father being Argentine, and reflected months of careful rehearsal through lifts, spins, and close, expressive moments.
Afterward, the dancefloor opened fully as the live band played on, before the celebration moved to the Bastion Pool Bar for the afterparty. A cake decorated with seasonal red forest fruit marked the transition, and as the DJ took over, the night carried on into the early morning, unhurried, joyful, and full.
Advice from the couple:
• Make both the proposal and the wedding deeply personal, a true reflection of your story together. For us, every detail was connected by a symbolic “red thread.” It served as a quiet reminder that love is built on the small, meaningful moments that connect one chapter to the next. Find your own version of that red thread, something that tells your story, and weave elements of it throughout your entire celebration, making it that much more special and meaningful.
