Weddings don’t always have to follow the rules. Some of the most unforgettable celebrations happen when love breaks free from tradition, when couples design a day entirely their own. That’s exactly what this styled shoot on the banks of the Neretva River in Croatia set out to explore. Blending bold color, symbolism, and a touch of performance, the shoot tells the story of a rebellious elopement rooted in place, yet defiant in spirit. From the theatrical gestures to the layered textures, it’s a celebration that feels more like a living art installation than a typical wedding.
Inspiration & Concept
Each year, Weddings in Croatia and Promessi Weddings & Events, two leading wedding planning agencies, collaborate with Showroom Design Studio and photographer Martina Skrobot to produce stylized shoots that reflect the evolving spirit of contemporary celebrations.
This particular editorial took place at the mouth of the Neretva River, a hidden Croatian gem whose natural beauty feels almost cinematic. The creative vision was bold: to reimagine what a wedding could be when freed from tradition and brought to life as performance art. A rebellious young couple elopes in secret, joined by friends from a whimsical traveling theater troupe who serve as guests, entertainers, and even waitstaff.
Promessi Weddings & Events and Weddings in Croatia played a vital role in shaping the story, anchoring the creative direction in both local authenticity and visual daring. The entire shoot blurred the boundaries between wedding, installation, and performance.
Fashion Choices
The bride’s look took deliberate contrast as its muse. She wore a structured, long-sleeved gown from Innocentia Bridal, complete with a dramatic train of ruffled tulle. Sophisticated and statuesque, the silhouette evoked a sense of elegance that stood out against the raw shoreline.
The bride’s bouquet, sculptural and striking, featured radicchio, pepperberries, ribbon, feathers, and grapes — a vivid mix that blurred the line between fashion accessory and floral art.
Subtle glamour came through in her styling. Bridal makeup, created by Estera Tolušić and assistant Tea Franić, leaned into a vintage aesthetic, featuring softly defined eyes and luminous skin. Her hair, styled by Dalila Hair Boutique, carried the spirit of Old Hollywood with a windswept twist: natural yet unmistakably polished.
As the day gave way to celebration, the bride changed into a playful second look: a voluminous white mini dress with a sculptural bubble hem, styled with red tights and matching heels adorned with bows. The transformation mirrored the shift in mood: from solemn ceremony to joyful revelry. With a bold red lip and windswept hair, she embodied freedom and exuberance.
The groom, dressed in a tailored black suit from Varteks, channeled a modern-day romantic. Together, the couple looked like they had walked out of a cinematic scene, both contemporary and timeless. Surrounding them were guests in billowing satins and voluminous silhouettes, styled by La Rent Event, creating a palette of rich textures and layered color.
Ceremony
With no traditional altar in sight, the ceremony took place near the water’s edge, where floral installations rose from the sand like crimson sea creatures. The couple exchanged vows surrounded by scarlet forms made of ribbon and blooms — an homage to the sea and to Croatian floral tradition.

Local symbolism was woven throughout the moment. A ceremonial boat, known as the Lađa, stood in the background, a quiet nod to heritage and river rituals. The performance aspect of the ceremony was subtle but ever-present, thanks to the actors-turned-guests whose presence imbued the gathering with magic.
"The biggest challenge was the rapidly changing weather on that day, but in the end, the sunset turned out to be magical."
Maja Starek at Showroom Design
Actors from the Metkovic Amateur Theatre stepped into their roles with intention, turning the shoreline into a living stage. Every detail, each look, motion, and placement, was infused with theatrical energy and Mediterranean soul. The photographer captured it all through a dual lens of bold color and black-and-white motion and mood, crafting a visual narrative that feels both editorial and emotionally true.
Decor & Setting
The setting was a masterclass in contrast: a wild, windswept beach transformed into a dining stage. The planners brought bold texture and volume to the design, working with lush velvets, sculptural florals, and elements that echoed local traditions with a twist. The tablescape was filled with layers: vintage silverware, textured glassware, sea shells, and bursts of pepperberries. Fringe-like accents and oversized red bows hinted at regional customs, reinterpreted through a high-concept lens.
Their creative direction ensured that no detail felt accidental: every placement, color, and silhouette told part of the larger story. By marrying natural landscape with bold design, they created a wedding that felt simultaneously intimate and grand.
Dinner as Theater
The dining experience was envisioned as an immersive performance. Plates were topped with handwritten notes and coastal treasures, while traditional local delicacies were served by theatrical hosts dressed in Renaissance-style costumes. It was playful, sensual, and rooted in the senses.
Each course became a part of the visual narrative: oysters nestled in red coral, shrimp tartare served in radicchio leaves, creamy desserts topped with strawberries and raspberries. Tomatoes, olives, eggs, and regional charcuterie turned the tablescape into an edible still life, a feast for both eyes and palate.

Chef Luka Dupin crafted a menu that honored Croatian flavors, paired with fine regional wines. Even the smallest touch carried weight, from the tomato-filled goblets to the baroque-inspired arrangements. Laferi‘s cake added the finishing note: elegant, sculptural, and cheekily devoured by the couple under the moonlit sky.
This styled shoot aimed to create a moment so specific and stylised that it transcended the category of weddings. With the extraordinary team of artists and vendors, this day became a living installation, where love, tradition, and theater met the sea.
