Meet the Bridal Designer: Amsale

Combining innovation and tradition, Amsale stands as an iconic New York City atelier and design house, renowned for crafting striking and refined wedding wear tailored to the modern bride while also revolutionizing the shopping experience through a tech-forward approach.

Designer Amsale Aberra, celebrated for her modern yet timeless aesthetic, curated a collection of sophisticated gowns with crisp, clean lines, exquisite draping, and figure-celebrating silhouettes that evoke a sense of emotion and connection.

Amsale is distinctive due to its founder, philosophy, and style. We are delighted to delve deeper into the essence of Amsale and share more about this unique brand and its indelible legacy.

“I believe that true style knows no place or time – more than an aesthetic, STYLE is a way of living.”

The Designer

The journey of Ethiopian native designer Amsale Aberra commenced with her own wedding gown in 1985. Seeking a more modern silhouette, Amsale found her options limited. She eschewed the overly ornate (on-trend in that era) and opted for a design of her creation—strikingly minimalist, yet exuding elegance and personal flair. This pivotal moment propelled her towards establishing her namesake bridal label.

Having immigrated from Ethiopia at 19, Amsale Aberra used her talent, drive, and FIT education to forge a global fashion brand. As the first Black female designer to be elected to the CFDA, Amsale is recognized as the inventor of the modern wedding dress.

Following her passing in 2018, her husband and CEO Neil Brown, along with the senior design duo Sarah Swann and Michael Cho, now guide the brand forward, ensuring Amsale’s legacy continues to thrive.

The Brand

As a Black-owned business, Amsale creates an inclusive environment, prioritizing both its brides and employees. Embracing connection, creativity, and collaboration values, the team drives industry leadership through innovation. Renowned as one of the world’s leading luxury bridal houses, The Amsale Group distributes its collections through esteemed bridal salons and specialty stores across the globe.

Philosophy and Style

In line with Amsale’s founding philosophy of elegant simplicity, every design is meticulously handcrafted using couture dressmaking techniques at Amsale’s New York City atelier. These pieces embody modern femininity, confidence, understated glamour, and attention to detail—each elegantly reflecting the individual style of its wearer.

Fall 2024 Collection

For the latest collection, Amsale head designer Michael Cho and his team were inspired by ikebana, the uniquely Japanese art of floral arranging. It recalls respect for nature and values simplicity, balance, and harmony. Through textured floral jacquard, satin fabric, sculptural blooms and stems, sophisticated lines, and silhouettes, these gowns pay homage to ikebana in a contemporary and refined manner.
