Black used to be the one color wedding guests were told to avoid outright, too close to mourning, too much of a statement for someone else’s day. That rule has quietly fallen apart. At most weddings now, particularly anything formal, evening, or held indoors, a well-cut black dress reads as polished and considered, and it solves a real problem: it works with almost any accessory, flatters nearly every body, and photographs well under low reception lighting in a way pastels sometimes don’t.

That said, black still isn’t a free pass everywhere. A casual daytime garden wedding or a couple who’s specifically asked for color on the invitation calls for a different approach, and an overly severe, funeral-adjacent cut can still miss the mark even when the color itself is fine.
