An Intimate Garden Wedding at Garden Valley Ranch in California

Featured Members

Venus and Ivan’s story began with a modern introduction through a dating app and grew into a partnership built on warmth, adventure, and a deep care for others. Venus, a nurse, is naturally compassionate, and Ivan, a professional caddie, shares her love of life outdoors. Over many years together, they made a home around the values they share, and around Lucky and Piglet, the much-adored dogs at the heart of their little family.

For their wedding, Venus and Ivan wanted a celebration that felt intimate, natural, and close to the people they love. Garden Valley Ranch, with its mature gardens, winding paths, and abundant roses, suited both their love of the outdoors and their taste for beauty that doesn’t feel overly arranged. They didn’t build the day around spectacle or trends. They let the setting speak for itself and kept the décor simple and the mood warm and relaxed. Their greatest wish was to gather their closest family and friends in a beautiful place, with time for children to wander, conversations to linger, and everyone to feel fully present, and Angie Mandl captured all of it with real warmth and care.

Fashion

Venus wore a romantic vintage gown that looked right at home in the gardens. Its history and softly feminine character gave her look an individuality no seasonal pick could match, and the whole effect was personal, graceful, and timeless. Her fragrance was Coastal Bloom by Sand + Fog, a cruelty-free scent that suited her thoughtful approach to the day. Notes of sparkling citrus, soft spice, jasmine, lavender, vanilla, and sandalwood gave it a mix of freshness and warmth, romantic and quiet, with a subtle edge. Together, the gown and the fragrance made a bridal look built on conscious choices, quiet confidence, and a beauty that felt distinctly her own.

Venus spent the morning with her mother and sisters in Garden Valley Ranch’s bridal suite, a room full of antique furnishings and romantic character. It gave the women in her family an intimate place to be together before the ceremony.

The most personal detail of Ivan’s look was a pair of custom gold cufflinks, a gift from Venus, each engraved with a portrait of their dogs, Lucky and Piglet. Sweet and full of meaning, they carried a small piece of the life the couple had already made together into his wedding-day look.

Ceremony

Garden Valley Ranch has several spots on site, and the couple chose the Secret Garden for the ceremony, which made it feel especially intimate. Venus’s young nephew, Gavin, walked down the aisle with the rings, adding a note of sweetness to the moment.

Inspiration & Planning

Venus and Ivan didn’t draw the vision from a particular film, book, or historical period. It grew from their love of nature and their wish for a celebration that felt personal, welcoming, and relaxed. Sustainability mattered to Venus, who was mindful of the waste that comes with event décor, so she looked for a venue whose natural beauty would make heavy embellishment unnecessary.

Garden Valley Ranch became both the setting and the main source of inspiration. Its romantic rose gardens, mature trees, winding paths, and layered landscape had such a distinct atmosphere that the design never had to compete with it. The planning focused on adding to what was already there. The palette stayed soft and organic, and the florals echoed the garden with romantic shapes, natural movement, and a sense of abundance. Décor stayed minimal, with few extras, so the landscape, the shifting light, and the warmth of the gathering could define the day. It felt like an intimate celebration that belonged in the gardens, not a wedding built on a set theme.

Reception

The reception took place in the Belvedere, where very little décor was needed because the surroundings did the work. Walls of living greenery, abundant rose beds, and the colors and views of Garden Valley Ranch made a naturally beautiful setting with all the character of Sonoma County.

The menu was one of the most personal parts of the day, built from the couple’s individual favorites. Guests started with a grazing spread by SoCo Graze, anchored by an excellent cheese selection chosen with Ivan in mind. Dinner came from La Tapatia Mexican Catering, with freshly prepared Mexican food, Venus’s favorite. At the bar, two signature cocktails were named after their dogs: Lucky’s Old Fashioned and The Tipsy Piglet. The whole reception felt generous, relaxed, and full of the two of them

For all the grandeur, dinner was meant to feel like a family supper. Guests shared one long table beside the orangery, each with a personalized name card and a message at their seat.

Advice from the couple:

• Their wedding offers a simple piece of advice: choose a setting that already feels meaningful and beautiful to you, then allow it to guide the celebration. Prioritize the people, food, and personal details that genuinely reflect your life together rather than feeling obligated to follow every wedding tradition or trend. Thoughtful choices often create a more memorable experience than excessive decoration.
