London-based bridal label WED has built its name on dramatic silhouettes and intricate hand-draping, with a habit of pushing bridalwear well beyond the expected. For its Bridal 2027 capsule, the brand turns its attention to one of the simplest pieces in a woman’s wardrobe, the bias-cut slip dress.
Inspired by the Surrealist drawing method dessins communiqués, the designers explore how a well-known idea, the classic slip dress, can be transformed as it is handed from person to person and redrawn from memory.
Letting the fabric do the work, the collection offers a refreshingly relaxed interpretation of the signature hand-draping techniques that define WED’s handwriting. The result is the most relaxed side of WED we have seen. Structure gives way to fluid silk crepe, and the natural movement of the bias cut does most of the work. The capsule includes seven dresses, each focused on a different part of the slip dress’s appeal, from fine spaghetti straps and close-skimming bodices to French lace and bows reworked into soft, three-dimensional drapes.
Look closer, and a few threads run through the whole collection. Many of the most beautiful details live on the back, from cascading drapes to deep cowls that reveal themselves as the bride walks away. Soft cowl necklines appear more than once, and a couple of styles layer lace or tulle over a fluid slip for added texture.
Recognizing the deep emotional and physical significance of bridal attire, WED infuses their work with purpose and care. Each piece was handed between the two designers, Amy Trinh and Evan Phillips, with each reworking the dress through their own idea of what a slip dress is. Not only in its fit and simplicity, but also in how it ultimately makes the wearer feel. Complete ease.
The collection reflects the designers’ continued refinement of traditional dressmaking and their ongoing questioning of what a wedding dress can be today.
