Crystal and Risen’s wedding was a captivating blend of cultural tradition, modern aesthetics, and personal touches that left everyone in awe. Set in the heart of Los Angeles, their celebration honored their Chinese and Filipino heritage while embracing a contemporary twist. Drawing inspiration from a modern LA take on their favorite Wong Kar Wai film, In the Mood for Love, the couple wove cinematic elegance into every detail of their day. Captured by the talented Jen Sosa, each moment was transformed into timeless works of art, highlighting the unique atmosphere and vibrant energy of this unforgettable celebration.

Location:  Los Angeles, California, United States
Style: Authentic, Bold, Modern
Time of planning: 1 year
Number of guests: 170
Setting: Event Space
Season: Fall

Crystal and Risen’s love story began with a chance meeting at Donut Friend in Highland Park. What started as a casual outing over Nutella-filled donuts quickly evolved into deep conversations about life, challenges, and dreams. Navigating the pandemic together strengthened their bond, and their shared openness laid the foundation for a love built on mutual respect and understanding. Their story, as sweet as the donuts that brought them together, became the heartbeat of their wedding day.

Fashion Choices

Crystal’s bridal look was steeped in family history and heartfelt meaning. Her wedding dress was a labor of love, designed by Larysa’s Alterations and crafted at her family’s bridal shop, 2000 Dreams, which had been a part of her family’s legacy for 30 years. This made her gown the last piece created before the shop closed, adding layers of sentimentality to her day. Her stunning bouquet, designed by Gray Hong of Moonjar Designs, featured sculptural arrangements with bold pops of red and tropical accents, perfectly complementing her look. For the reception, she dazzled in a vintage hand-beaded Qipao, shimmering under the lights and evoking the glamorous aesthetics of 20th-century Chinese cinema.

Crystal’s makeup by Emily Kim of Kelly Zhang Studio featured a natural and radiant glow, perfectly complementing her Chinese-inspired aesthetic. Her look was elevated with stylish accessories like sleek sunglasses, a playful clutch, and a manicure tied beautifully to the wedding theme.

"I felt like a human disco ball on the dance floor!"

Risen’s attire was equally personal and symbolic. He chose a custom barong from Fernando De Manila Custom Clothing, honoring his Filipino heritage with its intricate design. Adding his unique flair, he paired it with Tecova cowboy boots, blending tradition and individuality. The groom’s minimalist boutonniere featured vibrant bloom that tied seamlessly with Crystal’s bouquet. His accessories, sourced from antique shops in Chinatown, carried personal stories, making his outfit as meaningful as it was stylish.

“He loved the combination of tradition, fun, and modern flair that made his outfit uniquely his own,” added the bride.

First Look

The couple’s first look was an emotional and beautiful moment, set outdoors in the vibrant streets of Chinatown, surrounded by the striking aesthetics of traditional Chinese architecture. Bathed in natural light and framed by the bold red hues and intricate details of the surroundings, their reactions were heartfelt and genuine, perfectly captured by Jen‘s expert lens. This intimate moment reflected their deep connection and set the tone for the rest of the day.

"We hosted our wedding at The Revery, a beautiful raw space that offered incredible vendor recommendations. Through the venue, we met our photographer, Jen Sosa, whose skill at capturing light and mood completely won us over."

Ceremony

Crystal and Risen chose The Revery LA as both their ceremony and reception venue. Its versatile spaces and proximity to their roots in Los Angeles made it the ideal location. Their ceremony was an intimate affair, attended by close family, with florals by Moonjar Design framing the moment beautifully. The couple exchanged heartfelt vows, officiated by Risen’s brother, adding a deeply personal touch to the occasion. “To kick things off, Risen’s parents—both pastors—came together to give a heartfelt wedding blessing that set the tone for the day,” shared the bride.

Rain considered a sign of luck in Filipino culture, began just as the ceremony transitioned to cocktail hour. The covered patio not only provided shelter but created a cozy and magical atmosphere for guests to mingle and enjoy the evening.

"It couldn't have been more perfect."

Cocktail Hour

The couple’s attention to detail shone during the cocktail hour. From the curated hors d’oeuvres to the cozy yet stylish atmosphere, every element was designed to make guests feel welcomed and inspired. Guests savored Filipino arancinis, wontons, and Espresso Martinis while marveling at the seamless blending of cultures and traditions. The patio, adorned with creative floral arrangements, featured vibrant centerpieces that doubled as edible art, incorporating rambutans, mangoes, and other tropical fruits.

Reception & Decor

As the celebration moved upstairs, the reception became a lively showcase of culture, creativity, and joy. At the heart of the room was an oversized 6-foot disco ball that cast dazzling reflections, setting the mood for an unforgettable party. The tablescapes featured sculptural floral arrangements, including vibrant marigolds and bold red accents, and the fruit-laden centerpieces that delighted guests throughout the evening. For the menu, Barrie from MyHouse Events introduced the couple to chefs Marco and Ralph, who crafted a meal blending the flavors of their Chinese and Filipino cultures. Highlights included crispy pork belly, garlic fried rice, and Chinese pickled cucumbers.

Jane from Yu&Us was their coordinator extraordinaire, helping refine the details and ensuring everything came together seamlessly in the months leading up to the wedding. She brought their vision to life perfectly.

Entertainment was a key highlight of the night. Lion dancers from San Gabriel Valley Chinese Cultural Association kicked off the reception with a powerful and colorful performance that left everyone cheering. Traditional Filipino dancers from Samahan Filipino Performing Arts added an interactive element, teaching guests the art of shimmying between bamboo poles. These performances celebrated the couple’s heritage while adding dynamic energy to the night.

"An unforgettable moment was my father-daughter dance. My dad practiced for three hours for our one-minute dance, and I was sobbing the entire time. We swayed together to a Chinese classic, Teresa Teng's The Moon Represents My Heart, while our guests joined in singing. It was a beautiful moment I'll cherish forever."

Crystal and Risen’s choice of signature cocktails, Espresso Martinis and Old Fashioneds, were a hit with guests, complementing the joyful atmosphere. DJ Wrex kept the dance floor packed with a mix of timeless classics and modern hits, while guests enjoyed late-night snacks, including a ramen bar and mini donuts—a nostalgic nod to the couple’s first date.

The night concluded with a heartfelt last dance to Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood”. Surrounded by loved ones, the couple soaked in the joy and magic of the day, ending their celebration on a high note.

"Our wedding was truly a family affair, filled with heartfelt moments we'll never forget."

Advice from the couple:

• Choose vendors you truly vibe with and trust them to bring your vision to life. Building that connection makes all the difference. We were so lucky to work with an incredible team of vendors who understood us and went above and beyond to make our day perfect. We can’t imagine our wedding without them!
