This architect-owned complex makes the most of its gorgeous setting. From hospitality to food to design, everything has a sophisticated Greek charm – which is a great treat when compared to similarly priced hotels elsewhere on the island that are more bland and international in concept. The main building where you have breakfast is stylistically confusing though, with fur coats on display in a glass case and a nautical theme.

From peaceful cave to Capuchin convent, nautical institute and luxurious hotel, this beautiful location has enjoyed a fascinating life. A setting for prayer and discovery, home to lemon groves and breathtaking Mediterranean views, this place has inspired artists and travelers from all over the world for hundreds of years.
The new Anantara chapter has left the original sandy-yellow colour of the facade of the convent unchanged, and the current interior design, whilst modern and full of creature comforts, espouses a simplicity that seems to reference the building’s origins. Local woods, leathers, natural fibres, and precious metals bring a softness that is blended with the contemporary accents Anantara is known for. But there is a certain ascetic simplicity to this labyrinthine heritage building that remains relatively unadorned.

The Madrona has never been more exquisite. Originally built in 1881 as a private residence for the Paxton family, the home was respectfully restored and reimagined as a modern-day boutique hotel by San Francisco-based designer Jay Jeffers.
