The Madrona – An Idyllic Estate for Intimate Weddings in Sonoma’s Scenic Hills

Just a mile from the vibrant town of Healdsburg in Sonoma County, The Madrona is a historic gem turned into one of Northern California’s most enchanting wedding venues. The Madrona was initially built as a private residence in 1881 during the Aesthetic Movement. The venue’s design celebrates “beauty for beauty’s sake,” making it an ideal backdrop for couples seeking a blend of history, elegance, and natural charm for their big day.

Amenities: Restaurant and bar, outdoor saltwater pool, gym, half-acre gardens, exclusive guest lounge, private bungalows, rooms with fireplaces and private balconies with sweeping views.
What we love: Unique Victorian-era architecture, a high variety of activities and experiences, and personalized service that creates an intimate, luxurious retreat.

A Venue Like No Other

The Madrona’s eight-acre estate is thoughtfully designed to host weddings of all sizes, from intimate gatherings to grand celebrations. The venue’s unique layout allows for both secluded spaces and expansive outdoor areas, making it ideal for events that range from a cozy dinner in a muraled drawing room to a vibrant open-air ceremony surrounded by lush gardens.

The property features multiple venues, and whether you’re planning a small gathering of 8 guests or a larger event with up to 150 attendees, The Madrona provides the flexibility to create a wedding experience that is truly one-of-a-kind.

“The Madrona is one of those rare places that invites in the extraordinary each day. Its unique history, natural beauty, and seclusion will beckon to discerning seekers far and wide.”

Accommodations with Historic Charm

The Madrona offers accommodations that combine the estate’s historic charm and modern amenities. The original Mansion and Carriage House, with uniquely designed rooms and suites, each reflect the property’s Victorian roots while providing the comforts of contemporary living.

Guests can choose from several types of suits, including the Mansion’s original master bedrooms with high ceilings and bay windows, or rooms with private outdoor balconies offering sweeping views of the valley below. Pup-friendly policy ensure that even four-legged friends are welcomed with the same level of care.

“It has seven different buildings, two of them — the Mansion and the Carriage House — were finished in 1880, and then some of the other buildings came along later. It has a rich history. It’s beautiful. It was in need of some love.”

For those seeking more privacy, The Madrona also features secluded bungalows. These standalone and neighboring suites, some of which date back to 1861, offer a more residential experience tucked away among the trees and natural landscape of the hillside. The bungalows provide private entrances, distinctive architecture, and a tranquil retreat that feels worlds away from the everyday.

"We inherited about 750 pieces of furniture that came with the property, some of which are original to the Paxton family that built the estate — a lot of their original beds, chest of drawers.”

Exceptional Cuisine

Dining at The Madrona is more than just a meal, this experience delivers the rich flavors of Northern California. Under the guidance of Chef Patrick Tafoya, The Madrona’s culinary offerings are crafted to enhance every aspect of your celebration.

The estate’s signature restaurant and bar feature a menu inspired by global destinations, with dishes crafted from ingredients grown right on the property. The Madrona’s half-acre gardens were created in partnership with Aris Curtis, a leading voice in regenerative farming in California. These gardens supply the kitchen, bar, and guest rooms with the freshest scents and flavors of the region.

“The Madrona’s gardens nourish the land, fostering a delicate ecosystem that produces top quality produce which our chefs harvest daily.”

Guests can enjoy a variety of culinary experiences throughout their stay, from quiet early morning rituals with freshly squeezed orange juice to rich twilight dinners under the stars. The beverage program at The Madrona showcases inventive cocktails, rare spirits, and an eclectic wine list that goes beyond Sonoma’s borders to embrace the work of winemakers from around the world.

Activities and Experiences

The Madrona is where every moment is designed to delight. The estate offers a variety of activities and events that make the entire wedding weekend an immersive and memorable experience for you and your guests.

The estate offers exclusive access to a seasonal, guest-only saltwater pool, a gymnasium equipped with Peloton and Tonal equipment, electric bikes for exploring nearby Healdsburg, and complimentary car service within a one-mile radius.

Art lovers will appreciate the unique and dynamic art collection curated by Dolby Chadwick Gallery, with multiple pieces throughout the hotel available for purchase. For a truly cinematic experience, guests can enjoy movies on the lawn or ‘High Tea’ – the timeless tradition featuring a light, garden-inspired feast with an array of finger sandwiches and tea-infused cocktails.

Whether it’s brunch outdoors, exploring the pathways that wind through the estate, or sipping cocktails as the sun sets, The Madrona is designed to create lasting memories.
