Set against the sculptural beauty of the Sydney Opera House, Helen and Jake’s wedding was a masterclass in intentional celebration, modern, heartfelt, and joyfully personal. From sleek fashion moments to spontaneous open-mic speeches and a floral dreamscape by the harbour, every detail reflected who they are and how they love. It was a day that honored artistry, emotion, and the magic of doing things your own way.
Location: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Style: Modern, glam, sculptural
Time of planning: 1 year
Number of guests: 95
Setting: Waterfront restaurant
Season: Spring
It all started over XO pipis at Sydney’s Golden Century, where an unofficial Atlassian tradition brought Helen and Jake together. Jake, dressed in a bold pink plaid suit, joined friends who happened to be seated beside Helen’s group. He slid into the chair next to her to chat with their mutual friend Kelvin, but Helen was already intrigued by his fashion confidence. What began as casual curiosity soon turned into boba runs and late-night conversations. With a U.S. visa in hand and both of their careers taking off, they agreed that long-distance relationships never work. An unserious fling felt like the safest bet. But just four months later, Jake was on a plane back to Asia with Helen.
Years of long-distance dating followed, including a 31-day COVID quarantine they made it through without a single argument. Distance didn’t pull them apart, it only confirmed what they already knew. On January 1st, in Kyoto’s Arashiyama bamboo forest — Helen’s favorite place — Jake proposed, nearly six years after that unforgettable night at Golden Century.
Bride's Look
Helen’s bridal look was the perfect balance of sculptural drama and modern minimalism. With the expert guidance of Jacqueline Au at Loft Bridal, finding ‘the one’ was refreshingly effortless. Jacqueline’s curated collection of contemporary gowns made the process seamless — and when Helen slipped into a Vivienne Westwood design, she instantly knew. The gown’s draped neckline and dramatic train spoke for itself, no veil needed.
"I fell in love with my Vivienne Westwood gown and bought it on the spot."
Helen, the bride
For a playful twist, Helen chose Maison Margiela Tabi heels, adding a subtle dose of funk to the sophisticated silhouette. Paired with delicate jewelry, natural makeup by By Eve Makeup, and a soft up-do, her look was both elevated and unexpected — timeless with a wink. She carried a uniquely sculptural bouquet by Francis Floristry, a striking mix of orchids, delicate wildflowers, and bold chartreuse ribbon, that echoed the playful elegance of her look.
Groom's Fashion
Jake brought classic polish to the celebration with a sharp tuxedo from The Anthology — an almost perfect off-the-rack fit. Though the wedding took place during the day, the couple opted for formalwear to match the elegance of their waterfront venue. He paired the look with sleek Tom Ford shoes that offered both style and all-day comfort, ensuring he looked sharp and felt great from vows to dance floor.
First Look
Helen and Jake’s first look was a quiet, magnetic moment tucked into the architecture of the venue. As Helen approached in her stunning gown, bouquet in hand, Jake turned with a smile that said it all. They stood still for just a beat, taking in the gravity of the day, and then melted into laughter, shared glances, and that unmistakable sense of ‘we’re here.’
This and many other tender moments were captured with stunning precision and artistry by Damien Milan who truly understood the couple’s vision. From sculptural silhouettes to playful textures and bold color accents, every frame was composed with intention. The mix of digital and film brought out both the elegance and whimsy of the celebration, highlighting the beauty of each line, the richness of every detail, and the authenticity of every emotion. Each image told its own story, yet together they formed a breathtaking narrative of a day full of love, style, and joy.
Ceremony
Planning a wedding from overseas meant bringing in the right support from the start, and Rachel Morton of Bubbles & Bouquets became the couple’s anchor through it all. Finding the venue was their biggest challenge — they needed something logistically convenient, yet undeniably iconic for guests traveling from around the world, many of whom were visiting Australia for the first time. The Opera House delivered on both: a true Sydney landmark that offered architectural brilliance and sweeping harbour views.
As the ceremony began, Helen walked down the aisle with her father, her gown catching the light as she moved toward Jake. The joy on their faces was unmistakable — from the laughter shared at the altar to the tears welling in the eyes of their guests. Framed by wildly romantic florals in vibrant pinks, deep burgundy, and bursts of green, the ceremony space felt both architectural and organic. Writing their own vows was non-negotiable, and the emotional weight of their words was felt by everyone in the room. With pianist Caitlin Gleeson playing live, every beat of the ceremony felt intentional and full of heart — a true reflection of who they are and the world they’ve built together.
"The ceremony turned out to be more emotional than either of us expected."

Decor & Setting
For the reception design, Helen and Jake wanted something that felt unapologetically them — modern, eclectic, and just the right amount of playful. “Our philosophy throughout? Find the artists you love and let them create magic,” the bride shares. That freedom, the couple said, is what turned a vision into something unforgettable.
Florist became, in Helen’s words, “the unsung hero of our wedding.” With just a high-level brief and a set budget, she brought the space to life with daring, imaginative arrangements. Think sculptural towers of green apples, pops of chartreuse, berry pink, and lilac, and wild botanical installations that leaned boldly into texture and color. The florals didn’t just complement the dramatic interiors of the venue, they danced with them, adding warmth, humor, and wonder to every table and corner of the space.

Reception
The reception began with a moment Helen and Jake will never forget — walking down the stairs and seeing their loved ones framed by breathtaking floral installations. It was, as they describe it, “genuinely jaw-dropping” — a fusion of the people they love most and the vibrant, artistic beauty they had only imagined until that point. Time slowed, and that scene became a memory etched forever.
The Bennelong Sydney world-class cuisine was flawlessly presented and effortlessly elegant. The couple skipped traditions like the first dance and cake cutting in favor of what mattered most to them: heartfelt speeches and spontaneous moments. The open mic became a highlight of the day — full of laughter, surprises, and deep emotion, creating some of their most cherished memories.
"We were unabashedly ourselves throughout the day."
Helen, the bride
Later in the day, Helen slipped into a second look that was all sparkle and ease, a shimmering champagne gown that caught the light with every step. The silhouette was sleek and effortless, perfect for mingling, twirling, and leaning fully into the joy of the celebration. With her hair down in soft waves, the change was a gentle shift from sculptural elegance to evening glam, made for movement.
Hosting a lunch wedding meant guests could soak in the beauty of Sydney Harbour in full daylight, then be tucked in by 9 p.m. — a win for everyone. And for the night owls an epic afterparty on a boat awaited, where Helen and Jake could celebrate with their closest friends, dancing into the evening with nothing but joy ahead.
Advice from the couple:
• Let your vendors shine! Have a clear vision and communicate it effectively, but then step back and trust the professionals to work their magic. We trusted Damien Milan’s advice with photography and Francis Floristry‘s artistic license with florals, resulting in work that exceeded our wildest expectations.
• Get a videographer! The adrenaline of the moment creates a beautiful haze, and you’ll be grateful to revisit those moments that you’ll almost certainly miss.
• Delegate ruthlessly to your planner. That’s literally what they’re there for — to handle the logistics while you focus on soaking up every moment of your celebration. The best investment we made was finding someone we trusted completely to execute our vision while we remained fully present on our wedding day.
