San Miguel de Allende rarely offers a neutral backdrop. A UNESCO-listed city shapes its own palette, and this became the foundation for Penzi Weddings, the planning team that brought the character of Mexico into Claire and Jake’s wedding. Their approach was simple in wording yet precise in execution: use the city as structure and let it speak through color, texture, and rhythm. The couple drew from its vibrant streets, colonial architecture, and thriving art scene, creating a day that felt both joyful and deeply personal, full of warmth and unexpected details.
Location: San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Style: Joyful, Vibrant, Fun
Time of planning: 1,5 years
Number of guests: 103
Setting: Estate
Season: Fall
Their story began in New York, where they matched on a dating app. Claire was intrigued by Jake’s unpolished profile and photos that weren’t trying to impress. Their first date ended with him scheduling a second one, and they have been inseparable since. They built a life in Williamsburg, adopted their dog Cash, and eventually moved to Austin.
Jake asked the question in the gardens of the Commodore Perry Estate, and when Claire turned after saying yes, she found close friends who had flown in from across the country. This night of quiet attention and loud joy carried with them to Mexico, where Mucho Amor shaped those emotions into a film that feels as lived-in as the moments themselves.
Vision of the Celebration
Claire and Jake’s aesthetic settled into a two-layered structure: the romance of San Miguel woven with a glam-editorial American sharpness. The first layer came from the city: bougainvillea climbing across terracotta walls, mariachis threading through narrow streets, the heritage of mojigangas, and the textures of colonial stone. The second layer came from the couple’s own sensibility: a white tuxedo with quiet precision, a jacquard gown with architectural shape, choices that offered clarity and contrast to the setting.
Pre-Wedding
The celebration began with a traditional street procession that didn’t need explanation. It placed the couple and their guests inside the city, soaking them in the warm, spicy brightness of Mexico. The charm was in the fact that nothing was staged; it wasn’t decor, it was the city’s own heart unfolding around them.
Claire and Jake leaned into the spirit of the moment with looks that felt naturally aligned with the city. She chose a pink mini with a jacquard sheen that echoed the bougainvillea climbing San Miguel’s walls, and he paired a light blazer with relaxed tailoring, the kind of understated polish that reads effortlessly on warm streets and rooftops.
The procession itself is one of San Miguel’s most defining traditions. It’s called a callejoneada, essentially a joyful walk through the historic streets, led by mariachis and accompanied by giant paper-mâché figures called mojigangas. For locals, it’s a way to welcome a new celebration into the life of the city. The idea is simple: the city becomes part of your wedding. It’s less about watching and more about joining the rhythm of San Miguel before the formal events even begin.
Welcome Dinner
After the parade, the group moved to Casa Carino for the welcome dinner in a private courtyard. Guests gathered around a Mexican spread, paletas, and an ice cream stand, and the night unfolded with the kind of unplanned ease that defines good weekends, ending in impromptu karaoke and a late swim for a few brave friends.
Claire changed into a strapless white dress, a deliberate choice that echoed the gown she would wear on the wedding day. The jacquard’s texture created a through-line between the events, a signature she carried from one celebration to the next.
Bride's Morning & Fashion
Morning unfolded in a quiet suite framed by arches and soft light. Claire kept her beauty approach minimal and exact: soft makeup chosen, as she said, “to feel most like myself,” and a hairstyle that balanced ease with intention. Loose waves pulled back from her face left her features open while still letting the length fall naturally over her shoulders, a perfect combination for brides.
The stillness quickly shifted into celebration. Champagne appeared with no ceremony at all, bridesmaids moved between the terrace and the suite in matching blue and pink sets, and the energy turned playful without losing its elegance. It felt like a warm prelude, the kind of beginning that gives the day its emotional temperature.
Claire’s wedding look took shape slowly, and the moment the Ines Di Santo Canto gown was lifted, the room changed. The jacquard structure held its form effortlessly, architectural yet soft, a continuation of the texture she had carried through the weekend. She paired it with antique family earrings, a tennis bracelet gifted by Jake, and Jimmy Choo heels. Her bouquet, created by Florklor Estudio, echoed the city’s palette, vibrant and warm.
Her first look wasn’t with Jake but with her father. It was a brief moment held between two loving people, and yet it carried the weight of the day more clearly than anything else that morning.
Groom’s Fashion
Jake wore a custom white tuxedo from Suit Supply. The jacket had a clean, structured line, paired with a black bow tie that kept the look classic without feeling heavy. His father’s Rolex watch was the only accessory he chose. It was a personal detail that meant more than anything new he could have worn.
First Look
The couple’s first look took place on a staircase where green walls, stone textures, and quiet symmetry created a museum-like calm. There, they exchanged private vows — a moment Claire later described as “the most romantic and intimate moment of the day, just us alone sharing how we felt.”
Ceremony
The ceremony took place in a wonderful garden setting brought to life by Penzi Weddings. The florals by Florklor Estudio leaned into rich, saturated oranges, yellows, and deep pinks, adding warmth without overwhelming the space. The bridesmaids stood in red and scarlet dresses, a palette that echoed the florals around them and made the entire aisle feel cohesive and intentional. Claire walked into a Spanish guitar rendition of Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather.”
“Feeling so enraptured by the love of all your friends and family while you get married is the most incredible feeling — to simultaneously feel like you are the only people in the room but also never been more surrounded by those you love is a beautiful thing.”
Claire, the bride
The ceremony felt even more personal because it was led by Claire’s brother and his husband. Their presence added an ease that only family can create, a mix of warmth, small jokes, and stories that made the moment feel less like a formality and more like a conversation shared with everyone present. It gave the ceremony a tone that was unmistakably theirs: heartfelt, light, and grounded in the relationships that brought the day to life.
Cocktail Hour
The cocktail hour unfolded by the pool, under cream parasols that softened the afternoon light. High-top tables were dressed simply, with barstools arranged to keep the space open and social. It had the kind of layout that feels effortless only when it’s thoughtfully planned.
Mojigangas and the beloved donkey appeared again, turning the cocktail hour into something warmer than a transition between events. There was laughter, photos, and a kind of collective ease that made the celebration feel grounded in the place rather than staged against it. It was playful, emotional, and Mexican in spirit.

The bar served the couple’s signature cocktails, including the hibiscus mezcalina, a guest favorite for its sweet, smoky, refreshing mix, alongside a full list of mezcal and tequila options. A Spanish guitar trio played throughout, creating a soundtrack that tied the earlier parade to the evening ahead and set a relaxed, sun-lit rhythm for the rest of the night.
Moments Together
Photographer Ann Mark approached the portraits as if she were threading the couple directly into the city. Claire and Jake moved through cobblestone streets, sun-washed walls, and narrow passages, and she captured the mood and ease between them. The images carry the full energy of celebration: warm ochre walls, textured stone, and alleys that seem to pull the couple closer.
Inside the estate venue, the atmosphere shifted into something more intimate. Green terraces, staircases, and quiet architectural lines created the feeling of a private garden.
Reception & Decor
The reception took place beneath a transparent tent structure that gave the vibe of being outdoors. Vines climbed the metal beams, softening the structure and blending it into the garden around it. Inside, Penzi Weddings created a layout that felt bright and intentional: white tablecloths, tall tapers, and colorful florals arranged in compact, sculptural clusters. Blue-rimmed talavera plates added a distinctly Mexican note without overwhelming the palette.
Hanging above everything was the night’s true focal point, a canopy of gold stars suspended across the ceiling of the tent. Under daylight, they looked subtle; under evening lights, they became luminous, catching reflections and turning the entire space into a warm, atmospheric glow.
And then there was the dance floor. Claire laughed that it wasn’t planned at all. “We didn’t know we were going to have a pink dance floor. We were so surprised when we first walked out into the space, but I instantly fell in love with our happy accident. The way the lights overhead hit the pink flooring was stunning and something I could have never planned.”
Dinner unfolded with speeches that felt intimate and unforced, the kind that hold both humor and gentleness. DJ Esli Cano took over, and the tone shifted instantly. The dance floor filled, energy rose, cowboy hats appeared, and it somehow felt like the most natural extension of the night.
