A Wedding that Intertwines Ikebana Artistry with Portuguese Tradition

Location: Alenquer, Portugal
Setting: Estate
Season: Fall
How long did the couple plan the event: 11 months
The number of guests: 78
Wedding theme/style: Ikebana, modern, fashionable, but authentic.

Tanisha and Jonathon are a dynamic couple whose professional lives reflect their creative passions. Tanisha works in special projects and marketing for fashion and beauty brands, bringing her expertise as a former beauty editor. Jonathon, on the other hand, runs a music label and creative studio. Their shared love for movies, dinner parties, reading, beach outings, and travel significantly shaped their wedding.

When the couple envisioned their wedding day, they dreamt of a celebration that combined their love for fashion, family, and the endless beauty of the venue. They honored Tanisha’s Portuguese heritage by celebrating their nuptials in the heart of her family’s culture. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Quinta D. Carlos, a historic wine estate in Alenquer, their wedding unfolded as a perfect fusion of cultural homage and modern style.

This after-summer celebration, meticulously planned over 11 months, welcomed 78 guests to an intimate and serene location. The estate, known for its lush vineyards and historic charm, provided an idyllic setting for a wedding that balanced modern elegance with authentic elements. Its traditional tiles and vintage china plates resonated deeply with Tanisha’s fond memories of her family’s love for Portuguese architecture and traditions.

The day began in a charming suite, where the bridal party gathered for hair, makeup, and heartfelt moments. Each bridesmaid wore a dress in a muted tone, chosen to reflect her style while harmonizing with the overall aesthetic of the wedding. Soft pink, earthy shade, and classy black dresses featured elegant designs that ranged from sleek, satin silhouettes to flowing, ruffled hems.

The exquisite bouquets from Babel Bloom complemented bridesmaids’ dresses. Each of them carried a simple yet elegant bouquet of white calla lilies tied with flowing white ribbons. These bouquets, with their clean lines and minimalist beauty, perfectly matched the floral theme of the wedding.

Tanisha’s beautiful wedding look reflected her unique style and fashion background. The journey to find her perfect gown included multiple trips from the U.S. to the U.K. to work with the renowned atelier, WED. The result was a breathtaking gown that combined modern design with Victorian era. The dress had a fitted bodice, a full, tiered skirt, intricate pleating, and a subtly shimmering fabric, giving it an ethereal quality. The bride’s veil, accessories, makeup, and bouquet perfectly complemented her elegant bridal look.

Jonathon complemented his bride’s look with a sophisticated suit from Husbands Paris, reflecting his impeccable taste and the couple’s shared love for high fashion. He opted for a crisp white dress shirt and a black tie to complement his suit, maintaining a cohesive and minimalist look. His round glasses added a distinctive personal touch, enhancing his overall aesthetic with their retro appeal and dark frame.

Under the warm Portuguese sun, a live-string duo played carefully chosen songs, enhancing the romantic ambiance when Tanisha, escorted by her mother, made her graceful entrance. Parasols provided welcome shade for guests, ensuring comfort for everyone.

The lovebirds exchanged their vows in a deeply personal ceremony led by Tanisha’s uncle. This touch added an intimate and emotional layer to the event. Despite her inability to attend due to health reasons, the bride’s grandmother surprised the couple with a heartfelt voice message, adding a poignant moment to the proceedings.

Following the ceremony, guests were invited to an outdoor reception where long tables adorned with crisp white linens awaited. Babel Bloom‘s floral arrangements on them were a stunning embodiment of the Ikebana style. They perfectly aligned with the couple’s vision, infused with authentic charm.

This Japanese art of flower arranging focuses on harmony, balance, and simplicity, using natural elements to create dynamic compositions. Babel Bloom embraced these principles, designing arrangements that featured asymmetrical forms and an interplay of lines, textures, and spaces. Each arrangement was thoughtfully composed to reflect a sense of natural grace, highlighting the beauty of individual stems and blooms.

The table centerpieces showcased a minimalist approach with a focus on varying heights and shapes. Delicate stems of Queen Anne’s lace, amaranthus, and yarrow intertwined with vibrant dahlias and cosmos, creating a visual dance of colors and textures. The use of reaching, cascading elements like green amaranthus brought a dynamic movement to the arrangements, contrasting with the sturdy, upright forms of the other flowers.

Each centerpiece was placed in sleek, modern vases that complemented the Ikebana style, allowing the flowers to be the focal point. The choice of neutral and green hues with occasional pops of color harmonized with the wedding’s overall palette, blending seamlessly with the estate’s natural surroundings.

The venue, with its ivy-clad walls and timeless architecture, provided an ideal canvas for floral arrangements that brought the space to life. The decor’s minimalist and artistic approach mirrored the estate’s serene and historic ambiance.

Tanisha and Jonathon’s wedding atmosphere was cozy and vibrant, creating an unforgettable celebration. The seamless fusion of different cultures and the couple’s styles made the day truly incredible. For the newlyweds, the day was so much more than they had imagined. Their vision of a celebration that was both stylish and authentically them came to life in every detail. The fashion-forward attire, the heartfelt ceremony, and the elegant reception – every aspect exceeded their expectations. The couple’s love was reflected in the joyful and relaxed atmosphere, making the day feel like a true extension of their personalities.
