The mere thought of seeing something unimaginably ancient evokes awe. This sense of excitement and delight amplifies when this thought turns into action, and one is immersed in an entirely different reality. Sarah Boller, a destination wedding photographer, embarked on a journey unlike any other when she traveled to Matera, Italy, to capture Erica and Peyton’s elopement. Reflecting on her experience, Sarah describes it as exceptional, emphasizing Matera’s unique charm and beauty.
"Shooting Erica and Peyton in Matera, was truly a magical day. I have traveled all over shooting weddings, but Matera, the third oldest city in the world, is unlike anywhere else I have shot. Walking the streets of the city feels like stepping back in time."

Situated in the southern part of Italy, within the Basilicata region, Matera boasts a history dating back millennia. The city was built along the sides of a deep ravine, dotted with natural caves that served as dwellings for early humans. The winding streets of Matera, rich heritage, and historic architecture offer a captivating and unique backdrop for love to unfold, which starkly contrasts the picturesque beaches and sparkling blue coves commonly associated with southern Italy.
With the peace of the early morning hours, as the town slowly awakened, Matera took on an otherworldly glow, setting the stage for a romance-filled day. “We started the day at sunrise, and the sun coming up over the mountains created the absolutely dreamiest light in the city. The city was mostly still asleep as we shot, giving the Piazza San Pietro Caveoso all to ourselves,” – Sarah recalls.
To lean into a monochromatic moment, the planning team included a vintage 1967 Alpha Romeo Duetto, pulling from the creamy hues of the landscape. Its timeless design seamlessly blended with the historic surroundings, serving as the perfect canvas for the vision that was about to unfold.
The car was filled with scented flowers that brought the scene to life. Shades of peach, honey, and lavender infused the setting with warmth and color, contrasting beautifully against the monochromatic backdrop. A lush bouquet adorned with flowing silk ribbons added a touch of whimsy, accentuating the aesthetics of the surroundings.
Erica exuded sophistication and style, dressed in an exquisite three-piece set of a sleek band-top, structured cropped jacket, and a floor-length straight skirt. She achieved a harmonious blend of modernity and classic allure by pairing her chic suit with the opulent elegance of an extra-long “royal” veil. Her Prada’s hallmark sunglasses brought a contemporary, understated touch. Finishing touches such as delicate rings and a coin necklace supported the location’s ambiance.
The groom’s choice of attire was equally refined. In a timeless black suit paired with a black-buttoned white shirt, Payton effortlessly complemented Erica’s outfit. His patent loafers elevated his look, while his dynamic hairstyle added a modern twist.
Sarah and the creative team, along with Erica and Payton, ventured through Matera’s beautiful streets, searching for unique scenes for their shots. As they wandered through the historic city, they were captivated by the charming architecture and centuries-old cobblestone streets that seemed to whisper stories of times gone by.
The ancient city provided a unique backdrop for Erica and Peyton’s elopement. Sarah’s flawless guideship through natural and authentic poses led to stylish yet tender and intimate portraits.
