WINTER
“For Winter, think about utilizing berries, fruits, and branches. Even flowers that you have dried throughout the year can work. Fruits can be clustered at the base of your vase structure to serve as your filler and spill out for a dramatic effect. Branches can create lines and scale. I like to take walks in the Winter to see what unique branch shapes that evergreens that I can find.”

SPRING
“With Spring comes an abundance of flowers. Look to see what inspires you the most when the season begins. Take a walk through your local garden or park and see what early blooms are peeking out of the winter grass. Whether it’s crocus, daffodils, or wisteria – these are all early bloomers you can build a palette or design around. Wisteria serves as more of a shapely vien, so it can give you drama in an installation or design.”

TIPS
When selecting flowers and foliages, consider selecting varieties that will serve different purposes in your design. For example, you will want a focal flower that the eye naturally draws to, along with a shapely foliage or branch, a filler flower to cover your vase structure, and an accent “dancing” flower.

SUMMER
“When I think of Summer, I think of garden roses and dahlias. These are two focal flowers that I tend to gravitate towards, especially since they come in various colors. Your “filler” flower can be something seasonal like sedum or cottage yarrow, which comes in beautiful tonal shades that compliment many color palettes. Vines, such as trumpet vine or honeysuckle, can add movement and femininity to an arrangement or bouquet.”

FALL
“Fall evokes feelings of celebration in me. Maybe because I’m celebrating a productive wedding year that is drawing to a close, or just celebrating with friends since the holidays are approaching and the air is crisp. Either way, I tend to feel much gratitude during this time. Native grasses have their “moment” this season, adding texture to a design. Pumpkins can also add moments of interest or a structural component. Garden roses are in their second flush, so they can still be counted on for your floral recipes. This is also a great time to plant bulbs and seeds for the following year so that you can enjoy the seasons all over again.”
