The Top 7 Wedding Flower Trends for 2024

Flowers, fashion, and love are a trifecta that’s forever blooming. Floral design constantly evolves, and the latest vibes lean towards sustainability and garden-friendly and go on taking cues from rich Mother Nature’s palette. It’s the perfect match: style and substance, beauty and benevolence. And the best part? It’s just the beginning!

We’ve asked Greece-based floral designer Maria Voudouri to predict what floral trends will make your heart skip a beat in the upcoming season. Get ready to blossom in style!

MEET THE EXPERT

Turning the hexagonal, prismatic cells of Greek honeycombs into thematic centerpiece gildings, cultivating hybrid species of cerulean Tulips for the most outre bridal bouquet, or introducing watermelon cameos instead of vases are only one facet of Maria Voudouri‘s standout work.

Renowned for her almost biblical hunt for the perfect hue, texture, and olfactive palette, Maria’s innate talent is to bring her wedding couples’ botanical fantasies to life and strike the ideal balance between formal and wild. In constant conversation with her materials, she tunes in on what vibrates and always allows a surprising element to improve upon the original design.

From nature-loving vibes to bursting color combos, these 7 floral trends are set to rule the kingdom! All featured bouquets and arrangements are made by Maria Voudouri.

1. Earthy, Wild, and Fresh

It’s time to get back to nature! This trend is all about bringing the great outdoors into your wedding florals. “We’re talking earthy shades like brown, yellow, salmon, and dark green, mixed with wild vegetation and funky accents like mushrooms. We’re going all-out “nature eclectic,” using all the senses to connect with the natural world. Think fragrant blooms, textured arrangements, and even edible accents. Sensual shrooms? Yes, sure, let’s make it wild!” – Maria calls.

"For ten years, I've been knee-deep in the world of floral design, and amidst all the change, two things keep blooming: the thirst to connect with nature and the call to embrace the seasons. And hey, who doesn't need a little more joy and optimism in their lives?"

2. Colorfest

Florals bursting with life and color are perfect for reveling in the joy of existence. Picture an explosion of vibrant, playful flowers in shades of pink, red, magenta, orange, and blue. You’ll see this style of floral art in compact, structured forms, too, like mini sculptures of flowers (and sometimes even fruit!) decking entire aisles, the low edges of tablescapes, or lined down in smaller proportions across tables. They are showstoppers intended to give hearts a flutter. Play around with dazzling, bold blossoms like roses, varieties, and hybrids of tulips, gerberas, anthuriums, hydrangea, unusual carnations, and imperfect foliage to achieve these intense looks.

3. Textural Blooms

Texture works excellent for bright floral arrangements, enhancing their originality. For lovebirds who crave a soft color palette, playing with the size and shape of each petal can craft a harmonious yet dazzling display. Monochrome flower bunches are always in vogue, but mixing up the texture and size of buds to make them feel brand new is essential. If you’re drawn to classic white and green bouquets, sprinkle in dainty delights like oversized garden roses or ruffled and reversed tulips to enhance the dreamy vibe. Jazz up the arrangements with ivory variants, making sure your eyes are always entertained.

4. Statement Vessels

Move away from boring table settings and say hello to the striking, modern vases in all shapes and colors. Maria’s current favorite is the footed compote that screams “designer chic.” Also, instead of matching centerpieces, mix them up with a common theme. If you like pottery, have each arrangement be a one-of-a-kind piece with different colors and shapes. Your guests will get a unique view and feel the electricity in the air. No more copy and paste across the scene.

5. Unconventional Flowers

Weddings are all about personality and getting creative with one’s own vision of beauty. Like we do when we couple, breaking the mold and making our own rules is the way to go with floral arrangements, too. Enter unconventional blooms. Instead of choosing traditional beauties or traditional hues, modern brides opt for hybrids, lesser-known varieties, and new picks that ooze personality.

The daisy families are clearly having a moment. Available in many different colorations and species in both large and miniature sizes, they are guaranteed to add splashes of color and make a statement. Chocolate cosmos gives a whole new meaning to the classy and classic white bloom. Gerberas are the epitome of cool. Physalis, or Chinese lanterns, add so much interest. Broken foliage is incredible for texture and volume but adds a certain je ne sais quoi. There are tons of options. But even if a couple chooses to go for roses or carnations, creating a hybrid hue just for them is something a floral wiz will quickly whip up!

6. Emphasis on Sustainability

When it comes to eco-friendly weddings, let’s dive into the adventure of sustainable celebrations! Swapping foam for Oshun pouches, chicken wire, and moss adds a greener thought and cuts down on materials, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Even these excellent alternatives involve shipping, processing, and a bit of magic (no, moss doesn’t just pop out of the ground, and chicken wire doesn’t grow on trees!).

Opting for a florist who grows their own blooms or sources locally is a fabulous green move. Embracing seasonal blooms is another earth-loving idea. Peonies in November? Let’s swoon over timeless Roses instead! Dried flowers can be a chic and eco-friendly choice. Just ensure they’re not colored with synthetic chemicals.

Don’t throw flower petals under the bus for confetti – they make fantastic compost (check out the laws in Santorini Island, and you’ll see why)!

Consider the possibilities – bridesmaid bouquets turned into centerpieces or guests going home with a bloomful favor. And finally, If you’re ready to bid your wedding flowers farewell, why not pass them on to spread some cheer? Nursing homes and hospitals are top picks to sprinkle happiness.

7. Unlocking Creativity with Flower Power

As more brides and grooms seek out-of-the-box wedding venues, they’re increasing the volume of floral decor and getting creative with flower power to express their unique love story. From stunning hanging installations to enchanting table runners, many floral budgets are soaring to new heights. “We are called to push boundaries with bold and beautiful displays, bursting with color and texture. Think of it as nature’s art installation, where flowers bloom into shapes that seem to have a life of their own. You can safely say that the ultimate trend is not just a wedding anymore, but rather a jubilee where each event comes more spectacular than the one before it,” – Maria says.
