1. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey (1994)
Mariah Carey told EW about the song’s 25th anniversary in 2019, “I rebuke time. I have a thing where I just live outside the traditional realm of how we measure [it]. So in that way, Santa and myself are very similar. But I’m excited about the 25th anniversary. It’s like everything coming together to give the song a celebratory moment. It’s hard for me to know how much people celebrate this song other than what I hear from friends and just what I read online, or just other things, of people saying that they really get into the spirit with it. That, for me, particularly as a songwriter, is huge. So I do want to celebrate this year in an even bigger way than usual.”
2. “Last Christmas” by Wham! (1986)
The song was written by George Michael in his childhood bedroom. Says his Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley, “We went to his old room, the room in which we had spent hours as kids recording pastiches of radio shows and jingles, the room where he kept a keyboard and something on which to record his sparks of inspiration, and he played me the introduction and the beguiling, wistful chorus melody to Last Christmas. It was a moment of wonder. George had performed musical alchemy, distilling the essence of Christmas into music. Adding a lyric which told the tale of betrayed love was a masterstroke and, as he did so often, he touched hearts.”
3. “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande (2014)
You’ll be humming this one for hours. One of the best pop Christmas songs to exist, and it continues to solidify its position as a Christmas classic: “Santa Tell Me” has continued to chart every year since its release in 2014.
4. “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee (1958)
Talk about one of the ultimate classic Christmas songs. You can’t hear this song without thinking of classic Christmas movies like Home Alone and The Holiday. However, the song wasn’t a hit when it was first released as a single in 1958. But as Lee grew in popularity, the song started to catch on. “It was magic, and I think we all knew it,” Lee has said. “It took a few years to take off, but once it did, it really did.”
5. “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas” by Michael Bublé (2011)
Say what you want about Michael Bublé, but he has a voice that transports you to a speakeasy in the 1940s. And that’s exactly the vibe you want in Christmas music. His 2011 Christmas album is actually the singer’s most successful album to date, with more than 12 million copies sold worldwide. Those numbers also make it one of the best-selling Christmas albums ever.
6. “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobby Helms (1970)
Remember when The Plastics danced to this in Mean Girls? History! Fun fact: In 2019, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10 for the first time. It only took 60 years, four months, and two weeks.
7. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy Williams (1963)

8. “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” by Andy Williams (1965)

Nobody can get angry because you made them sing the English part. I wanted to wish you a merry Christmas. And I think it’s wonderful.”
12. “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” by Brett Eldredge and Meghan Trainor (2016)

Careful! The roads may be icy. Fun fact: This song was originally written with Van Morrison in mind, before Chris Rea recorded it himself.

Story about this song: To create a wintry feel in the recording studio, the song’s engineer reportedly decorated the room with Christmas decorations and turned the AC down to the lowest setting. Method!

A bit more somber than most Christmas hits, but you can always follow this up with Vanessa Carlton’s seminal classic “A Thousand Miles.”

Okay, why do we want to steal all of Meghan Trainor’s holiday looks?! This should be entered into a book of Christmas hymns.
