At WedVibes, we’re always drawn to the stories behind the aesthetics—the vision boards, voice notes, and late-night Pinterest scrolls that quietly shape iconic wedding moments. So, we did what we do best: reached out to real brides who are planning weddings their way. From spontaneous proposals to guest lists made on Google Docs, these brides are rewriting the rules and curating celebrations that feel less like tradition and more like self-expression.
In this series, they open up about the moodboards they can’t stop tweaking, the TikTok trends they’re into, and the vendors who just get it. Expect real love stories, real planning highs (and lows), and plenty of inspiration for your own “main character” moment.
Meet The Couple
Sophie and Owen both work in the music industry, so it was only natural that their first date was at a concert. In 2015, Sophie was working the door at a Sofar Sounds concert, and Owen was attending his first gig. A few months later, he invited her to see Disclosure at Madison Square Garden, and they danced the night away in the GA pit. They hung out all evening and all the following day and have been together ever since.
Sophie still remembers the first words she said to Owen the day they met: “Sorry, you’re not on the list”. Sophie was working the door for a secret concert for Sofar Sounds. Owen had been added to the guest list at the last minute by one of the founders. Sophie thought he was cute, so she let him in even though the list hadn’t been updated yet. They ended up talking the whole night. Owen chased after her to get her phone number, but she had already made it to the subway. As fate would have it, the second time they met was at a concert for the same company a month later. This time, Owen made sure to get her number.
The Proposal
On their nine-year anniversary, Owen surprised Sophie with a proposal at Madison Square Garden, the very venue of their first date. Nine years ago, Owen knew Sophie was the one, and their first show together at MSG had been unforgettable. As he planned the proposal, he realized their second anniversary had coincided with Billie Eilish’s first-ever NYC show, making the timing of her October 17th concert feel like fate. Owen surprised Sophie with tickets and got down on one knee before the openers, giving the 20,000 fans in the arena a chance to cheer them on—a rare standing ovation for a love story that had been years in the making.
The Wedding Vision
1. When and where is your wedding taking place?
Hopefully, 2026 in Charleston (or France…we’ll see).
2. Describe your wedding in 3 words.
Raucous, romantic, intentional.
3. Do you have a moodboard or a reference image you keep going back to?
I’ve been really digging drapery and deliberate reframing of open spaces with fabric – creating moments where maybe there were none before.
4. What are three non-negotiable elements for your big day?
Live music (we’ll probably have multiple performers – many of our friends included!), lots of speeches (sorry not sorry), modernization of Jewish wedding traditions.
Planning Process
1. What’s been the highlight of your planning process so far?
Sharing ideas and brainstorming all the possibilities with my mom, sisters, and fiance. I didn’t have a Pinterest board or anything before we got engaged, so I really had no idea what I wanted or hoped for in a wedding.
2. What’s surprised you most about wedding planning?
I didn’t think picking a venue would be so hard – it’s the anchor for the whole event, and our vision for the evening changes dramatically based on the venues we’re considering – too many choices!
3. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting their planning journey?
Before you start looking / planning, craft your vision and non-negotiables. I didn’t do that because I wanted to be open and flexible, but it has made decision-making much more difficult!
