A Refined California Celebration with a Chinese Tea Ceremony and Contemporary Style

Between the Mediterranean architecture and the couple’s Asian heritage, Kathie and Kevin’s wedding became a dialogue between worlds. Curated by Master Plans Events & Designs, the day moved from soft garden romance to vibrant cultural celebration with effortless grace. Under their direction, the historic Athenaeum at Caltech transformed into a dreamscape filled with light, intimacy, and rapid rhythm.

Location: Pasadena, California, USA
Style: Graceful, Warm, Timeless
Time of planning: 8 months
Number of guests: 250
Setting: The Athenaeum
Season: Summer

Kathie and Kevin have known each other for twelve years, beginning as high school friends. Kevin proposed on a small boat during their winter trip to Italy. This became the emotional and visual anchor for the entire wedding aesthetic: Italian coastal charm, effortless elegance, and soft light. They envisioned their wedding as a “perfect summer night” that felt warm, welcoming, and filled with quiet joy. The goal, as Master Plans later described, was to build an atmosphere that looked sophisticated but felt deeply personal.

Vision of the Day

The Athenaeum at Caltech served not just as a venue but as the soul of Kathie and Kevin’s day. Built in 1930 by architect Gordon Kaufmann, its Mediterranean Revival arches and frescoed ceilings shaped the aesthetic direction. Rather than transforming the space, Master Plans embraced its natural light and architecture, letting the stone, columns, and soft drapery lead the visual story.

For Kathie and Kevin, the goal was to create an experience that felt timeless and personal — elegant without excess, cultural without cliche. Their palette of muted pastels and cream tones balanced the couple’s traditional red ceremony attire, symbolizing the meeting of heritage and modern romance. The day flowed like a conversation between eras and styles, merging California sunshine with the intimacy of a family celebration. Kathie recalls: “We wanted everything to feel graceful and calm, with details that carried meaning — not just decoration.

Traditional Ceremony

In Chinese weddings the morning ceremony is more than a celebration, it is a moment of honoring parents and family ties, where blessings, respect, and the hope for prosperity are exchanged. Red stands for luck and joy, gold stands for wealth and a bright future, phoenix and dragon together symbolize an ideal union.

Kathie wore a red qipao, also called cheongsam, a close-fitting dress with a high collar and ornate embroidery, her gown featured gold floral and auspicious bird motifs that caught the light. Kevin matched her in a red mandarin-collar jacket with gold embroidery, his layered gold chains and a green jade pendant referenced classic symbols of protection and good fortune. Their wedding party framed the scene in soft pastels, which let the couple’s red and gold take center stage.

Bride's Morning & Fashion

The morning began in quiet elegance. Kathie got ready in a softly lit suite with paneled walls, antique mirrors, and the calm presence of her bridesmaids in matching champagne silk pajamas. Laughter, perfume, and the rustle of fabric set the tone for the day ahead.

Her gown by Allure Bridals – Madison James, discovered at Lorien Bridal, was a fitted mermaid silhouette with illusion straps and botanical embroidery cascading into sheer layers. The look was completed with Loeffler Randall heels, and a light cathedral-length veil. Her refined jewelry spoke of sentiment as much as style: a Cartier Love Ring, a diamond tennis bracelet, and an engagement ring from a private jeweler in Downtown Los Angeles, a gift from Kevin.

Her makeup and hair by Christy Yoo Artistry followed bridal trends: glowing, skin-like radiance paired with softly sculpted waves and a touch of romantic eyeliner. The result was a look that felt luminous, confident, and effortless.

Kathie’s bouquet by Honeycomb Affair was composed in a soft pastel palette, white peonies, peach garden roses, blush ranunculus, and sweet peas with airy greenery. The bridesmaids wore flowing sage-green gowns in coordinated tones with varied necklines. The palette framed the bride softly, kept the morning cohesive, and reflected the couple’s preference for elegant simplicity.

Groom's Fashion

Kevin started his morning in one of the suites, surrounded by warm wood, classic bookshelves, and golden light filtering through tall windows. The venue itself holds layers of history and charm. The Athenaeum even features the legendary “Einstein Suite,” where Albert Einstein once stayed during his visits to Caltech.

For his wedding look, Kevin wore a tailored velvet tuxedo jacket paired with black trousers and a crisp white shirt, achieving a style that felt both elegant and confident. His Christian Louboutin loafers added a playful flash of red with each step, while his custom cufflinks engraved with Kathie’s name added a personal and romantic touch. On his wrist, a Cartier bracelet, gifted by Kathie earlier that morning, tied the look together with quiet sophistication.

First Look

The first look took place in the arched walkways. It was a moment of calm before the celebration began, filled with emotion and quiet anticipation. When Kevin turned to see Kathie for the first time, he gifted her a Cartier Love Bracelet, a symbol of enduring affection and a complement to the ring she already wore.

The scene was documented by Bianca Tang Photography, whose use of natural light and composition turned the exchange into a timeless visual story. Each frame carried both elegance and sincerity, preserving the kind of emotion that words can’t quite describe.

Ceremony

Guests arrived to an open-air courtyard, where golden market umbrellas created shade, a tall gilt mirror welcomed everyone with “You look amazing, now let’s celebrate”, and a basket of white paper parasols waited by the entrance for comfort in the sun.

The focal point of the space was a monumental floral arch by Honeycomb Affair. Layers of blush, ivory, apricot, and soft lilac roses mixed with peonies, ranunculus, and sweet peas, climbing the stone columns and pooling at the steps, the palette echoed the bouquets and the pastel reception tables.

The processional began with Kevin escorting his mother, a quiet, grounded moment that drew warm smiles from the front rows. Guests settled under their parasols, waiting for Kathie to enter on her father’s arm.

Vows were classic and heartfelt. Framed by the arch, their exchange felt intimate, voices soft in the afternoon light. When they were pronounced married, Kathie lifted her bouquet with a bright smile, the courtyard answered with applause and laughter.

Decor

When the sun began to set, the celebration shifted to the courtyard, transformed into a warm, softly lit space by Master Plans Events & Designs. Champagne-colored draping hung from the ceiling, mirroring the arches below and filling the room with a calm, golden glow. It a 2025 favorite trend that turns fabric into part of the architecture itself.

The tables, dressed in cream linens and surrounded by gold chiavari chairs, were accented with pastel floral arrangements. Garden roses, peonies, and delicate sweet peas filled ceramic vessels alongside tall glass candles, their light flickering against the blush tones of the blooms. Each setting carried handwritten menus and a soft glow from layered candlelight, a perfect mix of refinement and intimacy.

At the sweetheart table, Kathie and Kevin sat behind a lush wall of florals, an artful blend of blush, peach, ivory, and soft green, framed by columns washed in evening light. It was both grand and understated, reflecting the couple’s elegant yet grounded approach to celebration.

Reception

The night unfolded with effortless joy. The couple’s grand entrance filled the room with cheers, napkins waved in the air, and a burst of playful energy followed: inflatable sharks, beach balls, and spontaneous dancing. Laughter echoed under the chandelier’s glow, turning the formal setting into a space of pure celebration.

During dinner, guests were surprised with an interactive watercolor station from Yellow & Lace: a live artist painting custom portraits for everyone to take home. It brought laughter, curiosity, and an unmistakable sense of connection, a nod to the growing trend of experiential details replacing traditional favors.

The cake, a petite heart-shaped confection reading just married, was a sweet symbol of the day: simple, nostalgic, and perfectly in tune with the current revival of vintage-style cakes. Captured once again by Bianca Tang, the evening felt warm and full of life. Between the historic arches, soft colors, and constant laughter, every moment carried joy that stayed even after the music ended.

Later the couple changed into formal evening looks inspired by Chinese pageantry, Kathie stepped into a dramatic red ballgown richly beaded with phoenix and peony motifs, Kevin chose a structured red jacket with a large dragon applique, both looks were custom made in Asia and reserved for the reception so the cultural homage could be celebrated on the dance floor as well.
