Michaela and Jonny’s love story began over 11 years ago on a blind date during a college fraternity formal in North Carolina. From navigating long-distance dating between New York City and Washington, DC, to making a cross-country move to Colorado, their relationship thrived on shared adventures and commitment. Their proposal was equally special: Jonny popped the question on the slopes of Keystone, surrounded by snow and 0-degree weather. This shared love of the mountains made Colorado the obvious choice for their wedding.
Location & Planning
The couple chose Black Mountain Lodge at Arapahoe Basin for its stunning mountain views and deep personal meaning. To bring their vision to life, they entrusted Maggie Boesen Co., whose expert planning ensured every detail was seamless. Guests enjoyed unique touches like a scenic chairlift ride and the chance to soak in the Rocky Mountains’ splendor. With over a year of thoughtful planning, Michaela and Jonny created a warm, inviting atmosphere featuring a minimalistic, airy aesthetic and a color palette that complemented the natural surroundings.
"They wanted to create an environment that didn’t feel too stiff or serious and allowed the natural beauty of the venue to shine."
Maggie Boesen Co., the planner
Bridal Morning
Michaela began her day surrounded by her closest friends and family, preparing for the moment she would say, “I do.” She wore a stunning ‘Adela by Alyne’ dress from Lovely Bride Denver, a second choice she made just six months before the wedding. She paired it with a bolt bouquet crafted by Lady Sunshine Floral. Her look was completed with glowing natural makeup and a soft updo, beautifully created by Divine Beauty Artists, perfect for the mountain breeze.
All of her bridesmaids complemented her vision, dressed in flowing shades of blue and holding elegant matching bouquets. Jonny, not to be outdone, wore a custom deep emerald tuxedo from Indochino featuring personalized embroidery that added a heartfelt touch.
First Look
During their first look, Michaela and Jonny decided to exchange private vows, creating an intimate moment filled with raw emotion. This quiet time together allowed them to connect deeply, setting a heartfelt tone for the rest of the day. It became a cherished memory, giving them a sense of calm and joy as they prepared to walk into the ceremony as husband and wife.
"To be able to spend that time together and get some tears and adrenaline out of the way really helped give us the right energy moving into the ceremony and reception."
Michaela, the bride
Ceremony
The space was beautifully adorned with vibrant floral arrangements by Lady Sunshine Floral, perfectly complementing the natural mountain backdrop. Guests were seated on simple white chairs that highlighted the stunning scenery, while delicate blooms tied to each aisle chair added a touch of elegance. The ceremony took place on the deck of Black Mountain Lodge, with sweeping views of the mountains serving as the backdrop.
Michaela’s Uncle officiated, weaving humor and heartfelt anecdotes into the service. A unique highlight was the couple’s decision to have Jonny’s Grandma Ruth serve as the flower girl, delighting guests with her role. «They also included their moms by doing a nonreligious reading of the ‘Seven Blessings,’» shared the planner. The ceremony’s intimate and meaningful moments left everyone with tears and smiles.
Private Moment
Following the ceremony, Michaela and Jonny escaped for a private “honeymoon lap” via the chairlift. This serene moment allowed them to savor their first moments as husband and wife while surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. Afterward, they strolled through rugged terrain, where their photographer, Paula B Photo, captured breathtaking shots that perfectly reflected the beauty of their love and the Rockies.
Cocktail Hour
Guests were welcomed into a lively, relaxed cocktail hour filled with delicious treats and refreshing drinks. A seafood spread featuring 300 oysters honored Michaela and Jonny’s East Coast roots, while signature cocktails delighted everyone’s taste buds. The atmosphere buzzed with laughter and excitement as the couple made their grand entrance, kicking off their outdoor first dance under the open sky. «They also hosted an oxygen bar by Peak Oxygen for all of the out-of-town guests who weren’t used to the altitude – it was a big hit!» added the planner.
Decor & Setting
The reception’s decor reflected Michaela and Jonny’s minimalistic vision, brought to life by the impeccable planning of Maggie Boesen Co. Long banquet tables adorned with colorful floral arrangements and taper candles created an inviting atmosphere. The result was a perfectly harmonious and stunning setting that captured the true spirit of the mountains. Instead of traditional table numbers, the couple named each table after their favorite ski runs, adding a personal touch that delighted their guests.
Reception
The dinner was a delightful mix of heartfelt toasts, laughter, and dancing, creating a warm and joyous atmosphere. Michaela and Jonny’s cake cutting was a touching moment that seamlessly transitioned into an evening of unforgettable celebration.
As the reception unfolded, the dance floor buzzed with life under the glow of twinkling string lights. The vibrant beats of the Deja Blu Band set the perfect rhythm for the night. Highlights included Michaela’s radiant energy in her pearl-embellished cowboy hat and the spirited ski-shot toasts that had everyone joining in the fun. Friends and family celebrated wholeheartedly, creating cherished memories that will be talked about for years to come.
Advice from the couple:
• Always keep the meaning behind your wedding at the top of your mind — the day is for you and your partner to celebrate your marriage and the new chapter together as husband and wife. Everything else is just a bonus.
• Take intentional time together, check in with one another, and try to be as present as possible. It’s likely the only time in your entire life where everyone you love is there to celebrate you and while it’s cliche, it truly goes by in a blink.
